I'm Shelley May Buxey, founder of Strong Living Personal Training, and the HIITster company, currently operating in Portsmouth and Brighton.

My journey into the health and fitness industry began with a passion for netball and athletics. I was fortunate enough to play regionally for South England — an experience which taught me the demands of high-performance sports. This experience led me into the world of health and fitness.

I studied Sport Science for the next three years, achieving a BSc degree at the University of Brighton. Having obtained substantial knowledge, I took on the role of Sport Science Lecturer at City College Brighton and Hove.

Wanting to become more specialised as a personal trainer, I targeted my business towards team sports, fitness challenges, and weight loss — with the focus on functional training. I lead an educating career with David Lloyd as a personal trainer for two years, proving successful results for many clients along the way. I wanted to combine my two new interests, leading me to my current role with Premier International Training, the leading fitness training provider. I work as a fitness tutor, delivering and assessing personal training and CPD courses, ranging from studio cycling, suspension training, exercise to music, and sports massage.

Teaching students how to become effective personal trainers made me think: I need to join the movement!  I'm now back home on the south coast of England, where I’m available for personal training sessions.

Having been obese as a young adult with awful eating and exercise habits, one day decided I had had enough and started my journey into a healthier lifestyle. With a background in psychology with a focus on sports psychology I have understanding not only of the physical benefits of exercise but also the psychological benefits with first hand experience of this. My focus is particularly on how good we feel after a workout and how nothing else can give you that buzz you get after a hard and sweaty work out. Having taught for many years I think all learning and training should be fun, exciting and varied- after all what makes you feel better than a good laugh and lots of smiling? In my own training I have a strong focus on weight lifting as being strong physically definitely helps me to feel stronger mentally. I compliment my weight lifting with HIIT sessions, running and swimming to keep myself fit as well as strong. I believe life should be about healthiness and happiness in equal measures and have a clear goal to help others understand the holistic love of exercise I have not just physical benefits.

I had been thinking for some time to try to get a bit fitter so I decided to take the plunge. I discussed my requirements with Shelley. I was very unsure how I would be able to achieve this as I had not joined a gym before. She suggested that having a personal trainer would help me to achieve my goal. It has been a steep learning curve but one that I have not regretted. I was very fortunate that Shelley was assigned as my personal trainer. She was really friendly, supportive, and encouraging right from the start, which was very important to me. Shelley makes every session varied and challenging, encouraging me to attain a greater level of fitness at each session. I have already noticed that I have much more energy generally and also even better, that my body shape is changing, particularly around the waistline area. I know that I am not there yet but with continued effort and Shelley's support, I feel that I can improve my fitness levels to attain my goal. In conclusion, I would certainly recommend Shelley as a personal trainer on every level.

Some of my most memorable workouts have been with Shelley. She's committed to making every session unique, effective and fun. She can turn any turn any outdoor or indoor space into a gym. Her creativity and technical knowledge means that every workout feels tailor made to me, my goals and ability. My strength, technique and overall fitness keeps on improving and she is such an inspiration to keep pushing myself! Can’t thank her enough.
